About us...

Spinners Choice is located in Dundee, Oregon. Even thought the Pacific Northwest is known for it's fair share of rain, we also enjoy sunny and hot days here. Small town charm and the vicinity of the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Cascade mountain range to the east make this an ideal playground for us.

We enjoy the fiber crafts just as much as you do and love spinning wool, knitting, weaving Navaho rugs and hand dyeing woolen fibers.

We are the proud producer of our own line of drop spindles, made from a variety of exotic and rare woods. They are known for their great balance and attractive design. Crafted with care, you will come to love our drop spindles and other accessories and enjoy spinning wool.

We offer our drop spindles and accessories retail or wholesale through our website http://www.spinnerschoice.com and spinning wheels and accessories as well as knitting and felting supplies through pacificwoolandfiber.com.

We strive to process your order as quickly and accurately as possible. Be assured that when dealing with Spinners Choice and Pacific Wool and Fiber you can expect excellence in products, service and commitment.

Carrington Collection Drop Spindles

Here’s a peek into our Drop Spindle Production!

spinning woolEach of our drop spindles starts out with a piece of selected exotic or domestic wood. We make sure that it is free from any defects, such as cracks and knots, so that the finished product will bring out the true beauty of the wood.

Each of our drop spindle whorls is pre-cut to size on a table saw, and then hand turned on a wood lathe. First we make sure the drop spindle whorl is true round, shaving off unnecessary wood, then we balance the spindle whorl by sculpturing the top and bottom, while at the same time contouring it, so that is has a heavier rim for more momentum. Shaping a drop spindle whorl is a craft by itself and demands a good eye as well as patience. Each piece has it’sdrop spindles own characteristics; it’s own “personality”. And yes, on some days personalities clash…creating is an artistic process that demand a quite mind and soul.

The spindle shafts are crafted from carefully checked hard wood dowels such as Walnut, Cherry, Oak and Birch. We inspect each future drop spindle shaft for warping. Then we shape each shaft and insert a hand crafted spinning hook that allows for exact positioning in the shaft center.

All “Carrington Collection” drop spindles whorls are finished with a high friction polish, bringing out the beauty of the wood and  protecting it at the same time.

Once finished, each spindles is checked again for balance, making sure you receive the best spinning tool possible.

Happy Spinning :-)

Color is fairly uniform dark red. The grain is close, and takes a high polish.

Pau Amarillo: From Brazil. Its bright yellow color, gives it great appeal, for specialty woodworkers that are looking for a wood to highlight their woodcraft project. Nice satin shimmer at endgrain.

Purpleheart:  From Central and Latin America.
Color is dull-brown when freshly cut, but changes rapidly to the vivid and well-known purple color if exposed to sunlight for a few days. Takes a high polish.

Bubinga: also called African Rosewood. From Africa; Gabon, Cameroon
Color is medium red-brown, with lighter red to purple veins. The grain is typically straight. Fine pores are diffused throughout the wood, which often contain a reddish gum. Texture is usually medium, and surface is highly lustrous. Excellent polishing qualities.

Zebrawood: From Gabon, Cameroon, and Congo in Africa.
A very large tree attaining a height of 45m with a diameter of 2m.

Cherry: From the United States
The popularity of cherry in the furniture market is reported to have increased over the years because of its warmth, personality, and ease of use. The narrow sapwood is whitish to reddish brown or creamy pink. The heartwood varies in color from reddish brown to deep red or light reddish brown. Cherry is reported to be very sensitive to UV light, and changes to its characteristic reddish-brown, mahogany shade upon exposure Luster is rich and satiny and finishing characteristics are good.

Walnut: From Peru
The color varies from light grayish brown to deep chocolate brown to an almost black purplish brown. The appearance of the wood is usually described as warm and inviting. The grain is slightly open and usually straight, but may be wavy or irregular. Texture is usually coarse, but uniform. The wood has excellent finishing characteristics.

Oak:  From North America.
Color is pinkish to light reddish brown or light brown, and is sometimes referred to as flesh color. The grain is usually straight and open. The texture depends upon the rate of growth of the tree. Red oaks grown in the north are less coarse textured than the faster-grown red oak from the southern states. The wood has good staining qualities. Large pores tend to produce strong contrast in staining
